So recently i got this requirement to generate read status report on organization announcement sent by corporate communication team, so i build this Powershell script to genreate this report using EWS,
This script will will get into each mailbox and fetch following data:
Sender, Recipient,Subject,Received Date, Isread, Folder
Note: we can add and report anything which is available in Email Item property.
This script can be used to report email read status in both Office 365 and Exchange Server environment.
Below are the perquisites before you can run this script to generate the report.
Example: "There is an org announcement sent, and we wants to see the users behavior, how many read it, how many deleted or permanently deleted without read it"
we will need to provide below 5 parameters,
$AllUserMailboxs = Get-mailbox -RecipientTypeDetails UserMailbox -ResultSize unlimited
foreach ($Mailbox in $AllUserMailboxs) {
Write-host "Checking:"$mailbox.Windows
.\ReadMsgstatus.ps1 -userName "Admin@xyz.com" -password "AdminPass" `
-mailbox "USERPrimarySMTP@xyz.com" -subject "Test Msg" -sender "sender@xzy.com"}
Note: This script check items in mailbox in following order Inbox, Deleted Items, Deletions (Recoverable Items) and if the items is not found in these folder then the script will check in other folders (Send Items,Outbox,Drafts are not included.)

- Install EWS managed API on system where you plan to run the script from, if API is not installed, download the same from here
Note: Please install the latest version of EWS API, version 2.2 is currently being used, please edit the same in script if you wish to run the same with the old version.
How to use this script:Example: "There is an org announcement sent, and we wants to see the users behavior, how many read it, how many deleted or permanently deleted without read it"
we will need to provide below 5 parameters,
- AdminUserName
- Password
- Sender Address
- Subject
- Mailbox
